Hindustan.net Selected Sites:
- Sri Lanka and South Asia Climate Prediction > This page is an experimental research effort that uses different statistical schemes and data to forecast
monsoon intensity and rainfall for Sri Lanka and Southeren India. There are two reasons for this research
initiative. 1) The rainfall association with ENSO for South India and Sri Lanka differ from mid and Northern
India; and most studies have focussed on predicting Northern Indian rainfall. 2) Use climate indices available
on the Web in a timely manner to create a prototype automated method for making predictions and
dissemination.
- Temperature Trends in South India and Sri Lanka > The perception has been that the temperature have increased within the last two decades in South Asia.
Typically the reasons ascribed to this rise are either global warming or increase in urbanisation. To verify
this perception we examined temperature data for sixteen locations in South India and Sri Lanka. The
temperature data was obtained from the Global Historical Climate Network.
The biggest rate of mean monthy temperature increase of 0.02 (deg C/year) was for Colombo in Sri
Lanka, and Vishakapatnam and Kodikanal both in South India. Galle, Kandy and Diyatalawa all in Sri
Lanka had almost negligible increases in mean monthly temperature. On the other hand both Belgaum
and Thiruvanantha both in South India had negative rates of mean monthly temperature change.
