When we opened them, they had the land

Religious Conversions in South Asia

My reply to a Christian from Pakistan

First of all welcome! You must not alter your impression
about India simply because some idiots working under some
naive and simply ruthless politician; have misbehaved with
few Christians in India. The problems are felt only when we
are there. There is quite lot of controversy on the issue of
forced conversion.

First of all one point must be clear that India continues to
be the FREEST country in the whole world for practice of any
religion any faith any idea as long as one does not indulge
in any kind of violence.

We have allowed absolutely anyone to come and join whatever
we have to offer, materially and spiritually.

Some people are simply using religion as a political and
even business weapon (One can see the later daily on various
evangelical TV channels in the USA); to achieve their mean
goals.

These people are the ones we should condemn and bring to
focus. Anyone using religion for disgusting mean goals;
zealots they may be, are very dangerous people and Indians
are not foolish to accept such scums. Indian people may be
very poor materially today, for whatever reasons, but they
are not naive nor they are cruel enough to kill someone for
someone's religious choices.
Most Indian people are not rigid about religious stuff but
if they are challenged continually there is bound to be some
reaction.
Gone are the days when India was considered a poor and meek
country.

India may not have flashy materialistic symbols but India
does have the most compassionate people with a very rich
deposit of inbuild spirituality which does not require set
of books or instructions.

There are two faces of the present crisis.
One is local politicians specially of congress party; who
are making political capital to regain power and they are
doing whatever they can do to malign the party in power. I
dont support any of these parties nor i believe they are
better than the other but for that our democratic machine
(the largest in the world) take care.

People who are born in Christian families in India have
nothing to do with this nor they are interested except that
like any other citizen of India they are concerned for
unusual notoriety the forced conversion issue has gained.

People of India have never been against the missionaries and
they are given due respect they deserve. Mother Teresa an
Albanian (ex Yugoslav. citizen) and many others i personally
know from Spain adapted for Indian citizenship.
Ironically in Spain i had long discussions with Catholic
Bishops and other religious propagators and they ended up
accepting that Indian people need not convert to Catholicism
or any other rigid religion as our spiritual reservoir was
great. In many of the seminars i had at monasteries,
university and in Business, i ended up attracting many
Catholics to be interested in Hinduism and Buddhism. But i
never even remotely indicated them to change their religion
as such as i consider that useless.
One does not need to switch from one faith to another just
for the sake of it as it does not mean anything. You can
pray wherever you are whatever your origin is. God is
omnipresent and one for all.

The other one is rather an issue of concern.
That is a systematic plan well financed by many foreign
groups; who are looking for the weakest section of Indian
society and alluring them to convert.

India has tolerated so many conversions in past 1000 years
and all the Islamic converts by sword or economic benefit;
have simply created havoc in the society and instead of
progressing we have been broken into pieces causing great
damage to our civilization. Who gained from the forced
conversions to Islam?

I believe that Indian society of today is not going to
tolerate that kind of systematic approach nor there is any
chance of any success as Indian people are very awakened
people.
One simply cant fool them. I challenge that.

I personally have no problems if someone can teach, guide
the weakest and most deprived people and attract them to
their faith.

I however consider these rather small pugnacious and
aggresive Hindu groups; equally loathsome and idiotic who
indulge in using force and killing.
This is unacceptable!

But the foreign elements dreaming of converting India (quasi
20% of world's population) into their fold are naive and
wasting their resources.
They wont achieve much by their forced conversions as that
is not only unethical but foolish.

Few weeks ago the Bishop of Agra, (fortunately Indian
Christian leaders are very intelligent unlike some other
close and rigid religious leaders) requested the foreign
churches and evangelist zealots not to market themselves in
such a shabby way.
Even the vatican, supposed to be the one voice of Catholics;
have appealed for not buying or selling the faith. Vatican
continues to reject all other faiths as less and consider
all non-catholics pagan just like the Muslims are constantly
told that all non-muslims are infidels.
How pathetic way of justifying one's faith! Isn't it?

I have seen with my own eyes in Latin America and Africa the
impact of cruel crushing of local cultures by zealots of
16th century Europe.

Luckily, I think today Christians the world over are very
moderate people and dont support imposing upon anyone.

A few incidents in last few months in India, dont seem to be
a trend and Indian authorities have taken all very seriously
and the culprits are being treated as common criminals.

Christianity in Pakistan

I have had very close contact with Pakistani people and know
personally many christian families from Punjab Pakistan.
Frankly to be a Christian in Pakitan today is so painful and
almost scary. All friends, except one, i met have had to
leave Pakistan for fear of their lives or they or their
family has been threatened for life. Can you deny that?
However i also know that Most educated Pakistanis dont
support these zealots and they abhore the religious
fundamentalists.

Most Pakistanis, like Indian people are not FUNDAMENTALISTS.
It's just a tiny minority of insecure people who behave
irresponsibly while the authorities are connivingly on their
side. Is this not true?

Pakistani religious fundamentalists are the most intolerant
today in all South Asia and the world has been watching
closely how Christian families have been treated in
Pakistan.
I would like to know your frank opinion on being a Christian
in Pakistan.

Christians in Bangladesh have had virtually no possibility
of surviving as far as i have heard.
I would like to know how minorities are being treated in
Bangladesh.

With all this i dont mean to defend Hinduism nor India nor
stupid actions of stupid people. I am not a religious person
but i respect people with faith for the spiritual content of
their hearts.

On these forums anyone can talk about these issues and i
welcome you to criticize any one (including me) if you have
facts or experience. Basing our opinions on a few newspaper
reports is merely hollow pontification and i invite honest
and sincere views based on reality.

Beware of hypocrates ! Hollow religious bigots make lot of
noise as an empty vessel make big noise. Think many times!
