I can give you an insight on the arts scene in India Vs. USA.
When I was in college (94-98), the only thing offered on a national scale was professional technical courses. The arts scene was still in its embroynic stages. Like you have a BA in Economics, that's all. I think that holds true even today.
In the US, you can take a BA OR a BSc in Economics and you can further specialize it into "International Trade" "Public policy" etc. If you're not satisfied with what's offered, you can design your own course in the period of 4 years. I could do all this in my bachelors!
Also in India arts is treated like mathematics here. In Economics there is no "right policy" and "wrong policy." The US system gives alot of importance to creativity and innovation and I see the exact opposite in India- unless of course you're talking about the IIMs. Heh, I'd rather attempt a moon landing than a seat in an IIM
There's too much emphasis on technicals and zero on innovation. The US educational system perfectly balances technicals and innovation. Also, as an 19 year old 2nd year student, I got access to University funds for research, was given a Lexis-NExis account for free etc. I was even allowed to leave on a research trip (like a mini sabatical). I don't think Indian collges offer this sort of dynamism and flexibility.

To be educated in india and be a part of the indian education system is an honour, or rather should be an honour for any indian. There is no harm in getting educated abroad, but the implementation of the same knowledge, using that knowledge to improve the education system in india would prove a better bet, or give indian education syatem a better tomorrow. We always have words to blame the syatem, but never have the courage to be a part of it and try change it for a better tomorrow. So these are a few words for those so called " wise people" who have gone abroad and critisize the indian education system, that they too are responsible for the betterment of the system and should contribute towards by thinking good rather than critisizing the syatem. every likeminded person should read this!!!!!!
