Ancora imparo (I am still learning) - favorite saying of Michelangelo - a great learner, creator & genius

"My definition of an educated man is the fellow who knows the right thing to do at the time it has to be done...You can be sincere and still be stupid" - Charles F. Kettering

"Learning without wisdom is a load of books on an ass's back" - Japanese proverb

"Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence" - Robert Frost

"Only the educated are free" - Epictetus, 1st century

"What is the difference between an educated and an uneducated man" - Aristotle was asked
"The same difference as between being alive and being dead" he replied.

School ends but education doesnot....

Education! Where do we stand?

India - home of some of the most ancient universities like Nalanda and Takshila - has almost one thousand million people and to provide education for so many people is one of the greatest challenges of coming century.

Your views are welcome on how to improve our system and how to inject new drive and spirit in the system.

India has 600.000 villages and almost half of them or more do not have any school, forget about libraries.
Our education system was designed by a few British thinkers in last century and we have done absolutely nothing innovative in this field as yet.

India may have one of the largest pool of trained people in technical and general fields yet we do have many hundreds of millions of people still without any education.

We welcome your views.

hello,

as an american born and bred i would like to formally welcome all indians to america. i think that there is something that needs to be said in these posts that not all of any culture is good or bad. i am a teacher of young children of all different races as i live in a city environment. many of these are indian children. some are boisterous as can be, others shy as a mouse. some behave as if they grew up on a farm, others as if they were trained by the nannies of the queen of england.

but when you see them all at their age, they all just love each other. singing songs together, holding hands, sharing puzzles in groups, and all playing with each other at play-time. they love one another as much as they would anyone of their own race in their situation. we should take a lesson of their lack of boundaries.

i do have one question though. most of our indian students (at the age of about four) have an extremely hard time adjusting to the classroom setting at the beginning. they have cried so hard that they have put themselves to the point of projectile vomiting. originally they seem to have a very hard time relating to the classroom setting and the other children. the mother of the child told me that she was afraid of the other children. she did not speak much english, but she seemed to understand some. she probably knows more than we actually think but is just not forced to use it and it is easier for her if she does not.

another child (this time a boy) was just as bad at the beginning of the school year but you wouldn't believe it now! he is the boisterous one that i was speaking of. he is a "pip"! he is still very hard to understand, as are most of the indian children, at least in this one classroom.

i just worry about the children being able to adapt readily to the western environment without too much anxiety. it seems to me that, through no fault of their own, the parents bring them up in a very tight knit family. this is a wonderful thing, especially in the world of today, but i think that sometimes they just have to let go a little bit more and a little bit sooner. it might hurt but it can only be seen as for the good of the child.

now, i'd like to admit that i am definitely no professional and i don't have the background, but i am just going by what i see and can only make any judgements that way.

can anyone please enlighten me? this is a subject i would really like to know about to increase my abilities in helping the children. what are some of your customs that i could learn to help them to calm themselves? are there any language schools that i could go to in order to learn just a little of each indian language so that i may communicate more fluently with the children and their families? children's communication skills are hard enough to understand without adding a language barrier.

if you understand the situation, can you please help me? the children really would benefit.:)

thank you in advance.
